PVD 422 ORAL MEDICINE AND THERAPEUTICS I        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

– This course introduces the fresh clinical student to basic oral medical practices and principles guiding use of therapeutics in dental patients.

– At the end of the course, the student should be able to know how oral health relates to general health.

– He/She should also be able to differentiate the classes of therapeutics that are used in Dentistry.

– An overview of oral soft tissues

– Introduction to oral medicine and therapeutics.

– Overview of the classes of medication used in dentistry

– Common analgesics – types and indications I

– Common analgesics – types and indications II

-Anti-microbials used in dental practice I.

– Anti-microbials used in dental practice II

– The use of anxiolytics, sedatives, hypnotics and tranquilizers in dentistry.

– Introduction to the constituents and actions of toothpaste, mouth-rinses and mouthwashes.

PVD 424 ORAL DIAGNOSIS AND DENTAL RADIOLOGY I        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • This course introduces the student to the dental patient, history taking and clinical examination and the complementary use of X-rays views.
  • It as gives an insight into the challenges posed by a difficult patient.        

TOPICS

  • Introduction to the dental patient: his anxieties, fears, and manners. An insight into the challenges posed by a difficult patient and methods of patient’s control.
  • Introduction to dental history taking and clinical examination.
  • Introduction to the basic investigations employed in the clinical setting like percussion testing, trans-illumination and pulp vitality testing techniques.
  • Introduction to dental diagnostic equipment, their uses and limitations.
  • Introduction to dental radiology and dental x-ray machines.
  • A review of the principles of ALARA and its application in dental radiography

CORURSE OBJECTIVES

  • The course revises anti-microbial agents and other common medications used in dental practice.
  • Also oral care products and oral aids will be taught here.
  • At the end of this course the student is expected to be grounded in medication and agents used commonly in dental practice.

PVD 523 ORAL DIAGNOSIS AND DENTAL RADIOLOGY II        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • This course expounds on the use of patient’s history and clinical examination to diagnose common dental conditions.
  • Details and interpretation of dental radiography are also taught here.
  • At the end of this course, the student is supposed to be able to make intelligent impressions and give diagnosis of common dental conditions such as dental caries and periodontal diseases.

PVD 525 PERIODONTOLOGY I        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • This course exposes the student to make up of the periodontium and the oral environment.
  • The student is expected to know the outlook of a normal and diseased periodontium; the influence of systemic factors on periodontium.
  • He/She should also know how to measure periodontal diseases with different available indices

  • What the oral environment is
  • Defence mechanisms and immunology.
  • Anatomy and physiology of the periodontium.
  • Age changes and influence on periodontium
  • Tooth deposits: material alba, acquired pellicle, plaque and calculus.

PVD 522 ORAL MEDICINE AND THERAPEUTICS III        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • This course teaches the student bacterial, fungal and viral infections affecting the oral cavity. Other non-infective lesions affecting the mouth are also taught here.
  • At the end of the course, the student is supposed to know infective and non-infective lesion affecting the oral cavity.

PVD 524 ORAL DIAGNOSIS AND DENTAL RADIOLOGY III        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • This course reviews the diagnostic techniques for gum and jaw swellings.
  • Advanced imaging techniques that are available to the dental surgeon are taught with an introduction to radiation therapy.
  • At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to diagnose jaw and gum swellings and possess an in-depth knowledge of orthopantomograph in oral diagnosis

  • Review of the diagnostic techniques for swellings of gums and swelling of the jaws.

PVD 526 PERIODONTOLOGY II

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • This course teaches the prevention of periodontal diseases with emphasis on the control of the primary aetiological agent.
  • Also, the principles of treatment of periodontal diseases and simple periodontal surgeries are taught.

  • Prevention of periodontal diseases.
  • Methods of detecting and measuring plaque.
  • Disclosing agents and techniques for removing plaque.

PVD 528 COMMUNITY AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY I        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • The student is introduced to Public Health Dentistry and the application of epidemiology to Medicine and Dentistry.
  • He/she is also exposed to World Health Organization’s Oral Health surveys and how they can be applied in our environment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • This course teaches the common oral white lesions and pigmented lesions of the oral tissues that the student may come across in dental practice.
  • Secondly, the student is given an update of Oral ulcerative lesions and cervico facial lymphadenopathy.

PVD 625 COMMUNITY AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY II        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course consolidates on lessons learnt in the Introduction to Public Health dentistry. The student is also exposed to concept of prevention of dental diseases.

  • Levels of prevention of dental diseases – Concept of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention at the individuals and community levels in Dentistry

PVD 627 DENTAL AND MEDICAL JURISPRUDENCE        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course introduces the student to ethics and ethical principles. Also, the place of dentistry in the dental team will be taught.

  • Oath of Hippocrates and ethical obligation in relation to patients.
  • Structure of health services in Nigeria: place of dentistry in the health team.

  • Use of records in dental surgery; confidentiality and importance for forensic identification.

PVD 622 ORAL MEDICINE AND THERAPEUTICS V        

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course teaches oral manifestations of systemic diseases. At the end of the course the student is expected to know the oral manifestation of diseases affecting the different systemic organs/tissues.

  • Oral manifestations of endocrine and haematological systems.
  • Neurological disorders important to the dentist, facial palsy, trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia, Frey syndrome.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Each student is supervised to work on a well thought individual research topic in any area of Dentistry. The basic approach to organize, conduct and write up a scientific investigation is also imparted on the student.
